It’s official. Mexico City has won us over. This 500-year-old capital city is brimming with culture and tradition, but it is definitely not stuck in the past. Ever changing and evolving; blending historic roots with today's modern sensibility – old fortress walls stand between sleek glass buildings, historic murals next to contemporary street art. To share this incredible place with you, we've compiled a list of our favorite spots so far.
To Eat & Drink
First Things First
In a city that's name is becoming synonymous with food, discover world-class restaurants, chef-driven cuisine, and an ever-evolving culture around every corner.
Start off just your morning outside of the city in the Coyoacán district, a colorful little artist community known for its tree-lined cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. Be sure to stop by Café Negro for a caffeine boost – this quaint little coffee shop will get your day off on the right foot.
Wide, tree-lined avenues and a touch of European flair characterize the chic neighborhood of La Condesa. Stop at Botanico for lunch and relax around the towering, lush cactus plants and zen-like garden design. Menu highlight: the fresh seafood tostadas. (image courtesy of @botanicomx)
You can never go wrong with churros and in this city they are plentiful. For a quick snack, we stopped at Mercado Roma, right in the heart of the Roma neighborhood on Queretaro Street. This upscale market is packed with delicious treats – the different counters feature all types of food, from tapas and tacos to cervezas and churros.
Take a stroll through the Polanco neighborhood. You can get lost for hours just walking around this area, taking in all the parks, shopping, and restaurants. Find a table at Restaurante Aúna - featuring design-forward interiors, custom handmade furniture by artisans in Mexico and fresh farm-to-table cuisine with global inspirations. Delicious dishes including a nod to Mediterranean cuisine with roasted sweet potatoes with labneh to Japanese salad greens. (image courtesy of @auna.mx)
To Do & See
Head to the Luis Barragan House for a taste of modern design at its finest. Be sure to book a tour in advance – definitely helps to have someone walk you through the home of this mid-century architect. Another must-see is Casa Azul, the house where the famed artist, Frida Khalo, grew up. You can’t miss the stunning cobalt-blue walls that surround the interior garden. Here, you can see work-in-progress paintings and walk through rooms just as she and Diego Rivera left them.
