The Porto Guide
A scenic view of the Douro River, world-class wine, abundant historic monuments, and excellent architecture, Porto has so much to offer. Perched on the western coast of Portugal and second in size to Lisbon, Porto is steeped in unique history and culture with an identity uniquely its own. A place that you "feel" rather than see, we find ourselves yearning to return time and time again.
To Do & See
Iconic museums, idyllic gardens, and everything in between.
Livaria Lello
Cited as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world (and rumored to have inspired Hogwarts), there's no surprise this spot is breathtaking. With a neo-Gothic façade, ornate interiors, and stunning stained glass, this hotspot definitely draws a crowd. Take a minute to chat with the shopkeepers and explore the shelves to immerse in a Porto's literary heritage and dig into more than just the external beauty.
Serralves Estate
A welcome respite to the vibrant city, spend an afternoon strolling Serralves. Housing a museum, park, and villa, you can easily wander for a full day. Our favorite is the incredibly designed museum featuring an extensive variety of contemporary artwork. Galleries with cove-lighting create just the right ambience for viewing.
City Gardens
Manicured flora, trickling fountains, and breezy lanes, in Porto there's a garden everywhere you look. These are mostly free to enter and offer a peaceful break from sightseeing. Our favorites are Jardim do Palácio de Cristal + Jardim Botânico do Porto. Don't be spooked by the free-roaming chickens, a fun addition to the experience.
The Menina Colina Guesthouse
We adored staying at this boutique hotel and its example of quality preservation and restoration for modern use. Once a 19th century family home, the historical details, architecture, and charm are ever present. Accompanied by a beautiful courtyard and only a short walk to the Duoro, we couldn't find a more picturesque place to kick up our feet.
