The Oaxaca Guide image

As we drove into the Oaxaca Valley, we were taken aback by the the beauty of this region’s landscape - mile after mile of stunning mountains and fields. It almost feels like you’re driving through a postcard.

However, the real beauty of this place is found in its culture and artistry. With over sixteen tribes living in the area, Oaxaca has a deep-rooted respect for ancient crafts and traditions. From hand-pulled cheeses and barrel-aged mezcals to handcrafted weavings and ceramics, we were impressed by the time and care Oaxacans put into everything they create.

For a few days, we were lucky enough to slow down and revel in the beauty of this region. This is a collection of our favorite moments roaming these breathtaking mountain villages.

AT THE HEART OF IT ALL

Oaxaca is made up of many scattered towns, but we stayed in the capital city, a small town nestled in between the Sierra Madre mountain range. At first glance, the colonial architecture and cobblestone roads may make you think this is just a quaint tourist town of the past. But in reality, this city is the heart of the region. It’s filled with a long-established art studio scene, vibrant cafe culture, and incredible cuisine. (Remember the hand-pulled cheese we mentioned earlier?)

EXPLORING THE LAND

When driving from one town to the next, we made a pit stop at the Ethnobotanical Garden. Built around an old Dominican monastery, it’s filled with row upon row of exotic cactuses and rare succulents. If you’ve been following our brand for a while, you may know we have an almost unhealthy obsession with styling succulents. Needless to say, we were in hog heaven. The garden spanned across 6 acres, and we spent hours just wandering the property.

MAKING MASTERPIECES
We couldn’t create a list of Oaxaca highlights without mentioning our weaving partners. Visiting these women was the reason for our trip. As we sat down to chat over a cup of rosa de jamaica tea, we were captivated with their stories of their Zapotec heritage and meticulous weaving process.

ONE LAST THING

Oaxaca is a place that is the opposite of all things fast-paced and mass-produced. Every craft has tribal symbolism and meaning. Every meal is made from scratch. And every building tells a story. We’re proud of the work we’re doing here with our artisan partners, and we hope that we can continue to create pieces that come close to doing this beautiful region and culture justice.
